BAKERS BUNDRAISING FOR SICK KIDS THIS EASTER                Bakers Delight Small

Hot Cross Buns will be all that much sweeter as bakers across South Australia bake over 90,000 buns to raise money for sick children at the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation on Saturday March 20.

On ‘Bundrasier Day’, all 62 Bakers Delight bakeries across the state will be donating $1 from every six-pack of Hot Cross Buns sold, to raise over $15,000 for the purchase of essential medical equipment to help make a difference for sick children this Easter.

Bakers Delight’s support will fund a new Respiratory Monitoring Machine for the Paediatric Medicine Division that examines the chest and abdominal wall movement in babies and children. Measuring respiratory efforts is crucial for distinguishing between obstructive and non-obstructive breathing disorders, thus ensuring the correct diagnosis is made and that patients receive the right treatment.

This machine will help monitor children like 9-year-old Caleb Crowden who was born premature at 28 weeks and diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnia at the age of three. Caleb and his parents are constantly in and out of hospital and rely on this piece of equipment to help make Caleb sleep when he is at home.

Caleb’s mother Donna Crowden, said: "This invaluable piece of equipment pumps oxygen into Caleb's bloodstream, enabling him to sleep throughout the night ultimately providing him a better quality of life at school, where he is much more alert and not so fatigued. We really appreciate the efforts of all the Bakers Delight bakeries to help the hospital afford more of these essential machines.”

Sam Tolley, CEO, WCH Foundation said: “In addition to providing benefits to children when at home, this equipment will also beneficial at the hospital, enabling doctors to measure ventilation and the size of each breath. This is important when differentiating between those children who simply stop breathing compared to those who stop breathing because of airway obstruction.

“The resulting treatments are vastly different so this machine will play a crucial role in diagnosis. Children with sleep-related breathing problems will reap huge benefits in more accurate diagnosis and fast-tracked healing from this equipment, so we encourage the community to purchase their Hot Cross Buns on Saturday March 20 so we can raise as much money as possible.”

Orna Terpstra, Regional Manager for Bakers Delight South Australia, added: “We’ve been baking our Hot Cross Buns fresh each day over Easter for the past 30 years, with over 152 million buns baked across the network. This is our busiest time of the year so it’s a great time to be giving back where we can, to children like Caleb who need our support.”

Over the years Bakers Delight has developed a variety of flavours to satisfy hot cross cravings of all kinds. This Easter, Bakers Delight Hot Cross Bun range of traditional, fruitless, choc chip and mocha varieties, will be even tastier and softer with a new secret recipe.
